The 41st Field Artillery Brigade is the only U.S. long-range, precision-strike capable Multiple Launcher Rocket Systems unit in Europe. The brigade is ready and capable to deploy in support of our NATO allies and partners. Robert Boyer follows behind them and looks around the outside perimeter making notes of any hazards Oct. 1, 2020 at one of Kosovo’s largest energy plants in Obilic/Obiliq, Kosovo. When placed in the safety officer role for the Kosovo Force Regional Command-East deployment, Boyer, an Army chemical officer organic to the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Oregon Army National Guard, never imagined that he would be tasked with a special project to visit abandoned and functioning factories around Kosovo and provide recommendations regarding chemical safety.

Saber Guardian is an annual, U.S. Army Europe-led, multinational exercise, which takes place during the month of July in numerous locations across Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania, and is co-hosted by the land force components in those countries. Saber Guardian is the largest in size and scope since its inception in 2013. Though it is not a NATO exercise, hosting nations are all NATO members.

Gonsalves, commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division, pays honor to Ivy Division Soldiers who served during World War II at a memorial dedication in Montebourg, France, June 3, 2017. Gonsalves joined the Deputy of the Manche Phillipe Gosselin and Mayor Jean-Pierre Mauquest to unveil the placard adorning a wall from the ruined 15th century fortress of St. Marcouf-Les-Gougins. The monument was set in the town center in honor of the U.S. Army Soldiers of the 4th Inf. Div. who liberated Montebourg June 19, 1944, after 15 days of fighting.Led by Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr., the Soldiers of 8th Inf. Regt. assaulted the northern coast of Normandy's Utah Beach, pushing through to Ste. Maire-Eglise, Montebourg and Cherbourg in 23 days. "The stories of their bravery, of their generoisty, and of their leadership is more relevant now than it has ever been," Gonsalves told the city's hosts Deputy of the Manche and the mayor of Montebourg, distinguised guests, veterans and compatriots. "It is up to us, today's generation, to carry that legacy into the future. Today, together, we pledge to do so and reaffirm our commitment as a free people that tyranny must be met with resolve, and that liberty is always the achievement of courage," said Gonsalves. More than 100 Soldiers, joined the commanding general, French compatriots and people of Montebourg, during a march from the town center to the memorial wall. Select Soldiers from the "Fighting Eagles" 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd ABCT, 4th Inf. Div., participated in the march, the memorial dedication ceremony and dinner hosted by Montebourg civic leaders. "Today, we remember those sacrifices and honor the courage of the 4th Inf. Div. Soldiers and our Allies who fought here in Montebourg, the first significant objective off of Utah Beach, where nearly a yearlong advance began to liberate the continent," said Gonsalves, dedicating the memorial to the Soldiers who led the Allied-invasion into German-occupied Europe. He then traveled to Jerusalem and met Israeli President Reuven Rivlin at the President’s Residence. Later in the day, General Scaparrotti was given a guided tour of Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Museum, and laid a wreath at the Hall of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

U.S. Marine armor, weapons arrive in Bulgaria

U.S. Marine tanks, artillery, and light-armored reconnaissance vehicles have arrived in Bulgaria to support NATO allies and international partner countries. The heavy equipment, assigned to the Combined Arms Company, Black Sea Rotational Force, arrived in Novo Selo Training Area, Bulgaria, Aug. 25, 2015. The tanks, artillery, and light armored reconnaissance vehicles were loaded on trains and moved across Europe demonstrating our allies’ and international partners’ ability to move heavy equipment across the region to support operations during a crisis. The equipment will allow the Marines to participate in mechanized regional multinational exercises in Eastern Europe.

The European Reassurance Initiative (ERI), part of the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2015, signed by President Obama on December 19, 2014, included $985 million in ERI funds. These monies enable the Department of Defense to continue its efforts to reinforce America’s solemn commitment to the safety and territorial integrity of our allies and to strengthen the security and capacity of our partners in the region.
