As the global battle against COVID-19 wages on, U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) continues to actively support its Allies and partners fighting this pandemic, providing critically-needed, equipment and supplies.
In the past week, the command has come to the aid of four European Allied and partner nations, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Lithuania and North Macedonia.
- To support North Macedonia, the newest NATO member, the United States, through the U.S. Defense Department’s Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster and Civic Aid (OHDACA) funding, donated personal protective equipment (PPE) to that country’s Ministry of Health as well as the Public Health Institute.
- In Lithuania, the Office of Defense Cooperation coordinated the donation of critically-needed medical PPE to the Lithuanian Health Emergency Situation Center, an arm of the country’s Ministry of Health. That PPE is being used to support Lithuania’s temporary isolation centers to further protect its citizens against this highly contagious virus.
NATO and the U.S. military delivered critical medical and disinfectant supplies to aid Bosnia-Herzegovina’s fight against the pandemic. From masks and surgical gloves to disinfectant solutions, the supplies were delivered to the country’s Ministry of Security and funded through the U.S. Defense Department’s OHDACA efforts.
- Essential medical PPE was delivered to Albania’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection to help safeguard the nation’s front-line healthcare workers. Part of that PPE donation was also directed to the Mother Teresa University Hospital Center in Tirana, Albania.
- Further support to other nations across Europe continues to be swiftly coordinated by USEUCOM and NATO. Speaking to media about the support efforts, Gen. Tod D. Wolters, commander U.S. European Command conveyed that, “None of these events would have been possible without the trust and confidence and coordination between allies and partners. This is proof that the Alliance remains ready and capable to support one another in these tough, tough times of need.”
USEUCOM is committed to its NATO Allies and partners and stands ready to support the fight against COVID-19, while maintaining readiness and deterrence at all times. For more information about USEUCOM’s role in combating COVID-19, visit https://www.eucom.mil/coronavirus.
U.S. European Command (USEUCOM) is responsible for U.S. military operations across Europe, portions of Asia and the Middle East, the Arctic and Atlantic Ocean. USEUCOM is comprised of approximately 72,000 military and civilian personnel, and works closely with NATO Allies and partners. The command is one of two U.S. forward-deployed geographic combatant commands headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany.
